From doghouse to penthouse: Giants? David Wilson has a game for the ages

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin looks like the kind of guy who puts players in his doghouse to stay. You get in Coughlin's doghouse, you'd better get your mail forwarded, because you're not coming out without showing him something extraordinarily special.
On Sunday in a 52-27 statement win over the New Orleans Saints, backup running back David Wilson busted out of Coughlin's doghouse, where he'd lived most of the season, with a record-setting performance. The Virginia Tech rookie, pressed into service due to an injury to Ahmad Bradshaw, scored three touchdowns and, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is the only player ever to have 200 return yards and accumulate 100 yards from scrimmage. His masterpiece included a 97-yard kick return, the Giants' first such return for a TD in five years, and a 52-yard sprint for a touchdown.

Not bad for a guy who fumbled the very first time he touched the ball in the NFL, huh? Prior to Sunday, Wilson had totaled just 111 yards on 28 carries and one touchdown on the entire season.
Afterward, Wilson said he was motivated by a curious tactic from Coughlin: "This week, coach handed out assignment sheets to everyone but me," he said. "Coach said, 'You don't need an assignment sheet. Just run fast.' I guess I lived up to my assignment." Yeah, you could say that.
