The Juice: Orioles All-Stars lead charge in win over Blue Jays; Marlins pummel Stephen Strasburg

The Juice returns for season No. 6! It's almost eligible for free-agency! Stop by daily for news from the action, along with great photos, stats, video highlights and more.
Baltimore's All-Star bats came out swinging in their 8-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. That includes the MLB leader in homers, Chris Davis, who contributed his 35th of the season with a runner on base in the second inning. After Edwin Encarnacion, an all-star in his right, homered to give Toronto a 3-2 lead in the third, Adam Jones quickly countered with a three-run shot in the bottom half and then three innings later J.J. Hardy added a three-run homer of his own to blow the game open.
Here's more from the Associated Press:
It's been that way all season for the Orioles, who lead the majors with 128 home runs - including a combined 68 by Davis, Jones and Hardy.
All three long balls came off Mark Buehrle, who had allowed only two homers in his previous 11 starts.
''That's what they do in a great park to hit home runs,'' Toronto manager John Gibbons said. ''They had the two big three-run homers, but you've got to expect here that's going to happen. You have to go toe to toe. We had a lot of hits, but we just didn't score a lot.''
Somewhere, Earl Weaver is smiling.
Jordy to the rescue: Sure, the Pittsburgh Pirates have four All-Stars this season, but a very part of their overwhelming success this season is the contributions they're receiving from unlikely sources. That would include 26-year-old shortstop Jordy Mercer, who came through again with a walk-off RBI single to defeat the Mets 3-2 in 11 innings. For Mercer, it's the second game-winning in just over two weeks. The other came on June 27 when his two-run single extended Pittsburgh's winning streak to six in a win over Seattle.
National nightmare: The Washington Nationals staked Stephen Strasburg to a 3-0 first inning lead against the Miami Marlins and then watched on in disbelief as their young ace gave it all back ?and more ?in the bottom half of the inning. When all was said and done, Strasburg had allowed a career-high five first inning runs, and then he allowed two more in his second and final innings before hitting the showers. The seven earned runs allowed are the same number of runs he'd allowed over his previous four starts combined. Not a good night at the office for Strasburg, but a satisfying night for Miami as they hold on for the 8-3 victory.
MORE SCORES
Cardinals 3, Cubs 2: St. Louis was led by All-Stars Carlos Beltran, who finished a home run shy of the cycle, and Matt Carpenter, who drove home the winning run with a double.
Astros 2, Rays 1: Jarred Cosart pitched eight shutout innings in a dominant big league debut.
Indians 3, Royals 0: American League-leading 12th shutout for Cleveland.
Yankees 2, Twins 0: Mariano Rivera records his 30th save at rain-soaked Yankee Stadium.
White Sox vs. Phillies (PPD, rain): Let's play two on Saturday!
Tigers 7, Rangers 2: Detroit does all of their scoring in the first two innings. Miguel Cabrera added his 95th RBI.
Reds 4, Braves 2: The Braves are missing their top four outfielders after both Upton brothers were lost to strained muscles.
Diamondbacks 2, Brewers 1: All-Star Patrick Corbin strikes out 10 for the second straight start and improves to 11-1.
Red Sox 4, A's 2: Seven quality innings from a resurgent John Lackey. He's 19-6 lifetime against Oakland.
Mariners 8, Angels 3: Raul Ibanez homered twice to give him 24 on the season. He's not an All-Star, but it would be fun to see the 41-year-old slugger take some hacks at the Home Run Derby.
Rockies 3, Dodgers 0: Yasiel Pug left early for the second straight game with soreness in his left hip. A couple days off before the all-star break seem likely.
Giants 10, Padres 1: Season-high five RBIs for Buster Posey.

''I had a 1-hour, 15-minute at-bat. First time I ever had to deal with that.''

? Chris Davis joined Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit 35 home runs prior to the all-star break. (via Hardball Talk)
? The Mets have lost eight games in walk-off fashion this season. Only the Marlins have more with nine walk-off losses.

Kovalchuk?s mother: Escrow, taxes led to son?s ?civilized? departure from NHL

Ilya Kovalchuk ?retired? from the NHL Thursday ? the news that shook the entire hockey world. SKA St. Petersburg, the KHL club Kovalchuk played for during this last NHL lockout, was expected to make a ?big announcement? on Thursday. But didn?t. It is now obvious what that announcement was going to be ? Kovalchuk was going to sign with the club. The champagne will be kept on ice at least until Monday, it appears. SKA promptly denied reports that Kovalchuk may have signed a contract with the team before he returned to the NHL in January.Kovalchuk is still in the United States with his family, while SKA players reported to the club for medicals yesterday. Players will start skating on July 15 with training camp starting July 22 in Switzerland. That may be the day Kovalchuk will actually join the team, although according to his mother (see below) Ilya won?t come to Russia until August 1. No official announcement has been made, although some SKA players, including goaltender Ilya Ezhov, acknowledged hearing about the move during their medicals.Neither Kovalchuk, nor his agents have made any official statements, other than the one announced by the New Jersey Devils yesterday. However, SovSport?s Pavel Lysenkov spoke with Kovalchuk?s mother (she?s always been very open with the media, confirming the 17-year ?original? contract Kovalchuk signed with the Devils), who shed some light on the situation. She was not surprised of the developments at all, saying, ?I knew about it, to be honest. Of course Ilya discussed this matter with me. It was back in January when my son was thinking about staying with SKA. But he went back to New Jersey to finish the season. Everything had to be done in a civilized manner; all legal questions must have been resolved.?Here are some more quotes from that conversation:Ilya Kovalchuk had another dilemma in 2010 ? to sign with the Devils for $100 million or to go back to Russia. Back then as a mother you unequivocally stood in favor of America. Why has your opinion changed? ?Maybe it didn?t change. But Ilya is a grown up man. He is responsible not only for himself, but for a big family. He made the decision. And I will support him either way. This is not a clich, this is a fact.?Did he like SKA during the lockout? ?Of course. Otherwise this question about leaving the NHL wouldn?t even be raised. And so it happened? Besides, there were some problems in New Jersey. You know there will likely be a change of ownership there. It?s unclear how everything will turn out.?Is it true his salary was delayed by the Devils? [ed.: The question is unclear as it may be interpreted a number of ways] ?Yes, it happened. Now, after the lockout, there are a lot of restrictions at all teams. They are also underpaid 20% [of their salary]. The League takes it as an escrow that may not be paid back if the NHL does not make profit. And then there?s government tax of 50%. That means on paper you are being paid $10 million a year, but in reality only 3. So the pendulum swung for Russia."Have you read the reaction of Jeremy Roenick who said Ilya stole $23 million from the Devils??Thank God I didn?t see that! I am [on vacation] right now. But I think my son earned everything he?s been paid by the Devils in full! He played 30 minutes per game, sacrificed his health, and made it to the Cup Finals. He didn?t steal anything. He earned every cent. The things [Roenick said] may only be said due to helplessness.?Another thing that shocked North American journalists is that Kovalchuk walked away from $77 million that were guaranteed to him. He had one of the best contracts in history of the NHL, and terminated it! ?The financial side is important. We like to discuss that everything is done because of money. But this is not the main reason, that you can believe. Although I think that my son will come to the KHL not to his [financial] detriment. But I don?t know all of the details, sorry.?Did you talk to Ilya last night? ?Yes, of course. Right before he talked with the Devils general manager. He said ?That?s it, the matter is closed. There is no way back.? It was probably a difficult emotional decision. But this is what my son wanted very much.?Are you happy as a mother? Now you will be able to see Ilya more often. It?s only a few hours from St. Petersburg to Tver. ?It is a huge advantage. I will be able not only to see my son, but my grandchildren. Yes, we?ll have to figure out some issues ? his daughter is already in school. But that?s OK, there is an American school in St. Petersburg. I hope that everything goes smoothly, and we will overcome all the difficulties.? Related coverage on Yahoo! Sports:? Big KHL offer awaits Kovalchuk? Moore comes back from tragedy? Canucks, Senators to meet in Heritage Classic, as NHL finally announces sixth outdoor game

The NHL has finally gotten around to announcing the final installment of the six-part miniseries no one asked for.
The last outdoor game of the 2013-14 season is a go, as the league formally rolled out its plans for the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, a clash between the Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators set to take place at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium on Sunday, March 2.
The other outdoor games have been official for some time now. What took the league so long here? Were they waffling on whether it was a good idea to hold an outdoor game in Vancouver, which gets very little actual cold weather even in the dead of winter, in March? Or perhaps they were trying to sort out the conundrum of whether a game played in a stadium with a retractable roof is in any way, shape or form an outdoor game? Or maybe they were just wondering if a sixth outdoor hockey games was overkill, especially when it would actually be a warm weather indoor game?
Nah. Just lining up the sponsor. From the NHL:
"With one of the world's great facilities as the setting, and one of the world's most scenic cities as the backdrop, the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic? at BC Place in Vancouver will honor hockey's Canadian heritage," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "With the excitement, the entertainment, the competitiveness and the fun of this game, the Canucks and Senators will create special memories for hockey fans everywhere."
[...] One of the cornerstones of the NHL's event strategy, the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic? took place on a sun-drenched afternoon in Calgary where the home team skated away with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
A cornerstone that has quietly gone unmentioned for three seasons.
Okay. I shouldn't snark on this game too badly. Like all the other outdoor games, it will undoubtedly be a fun event, and as a West Coast-based hockey fan, it's nice to be thrown a bone.
But it would be nicer if said thrown bone didn't also double as evidence that the lustre of the Winter Classic is soon to be long gone.
