Royals acquire Ervin Santana in latest attempt to bolster starting rotation (Big League Stew)

Always looking for arms to strengthen their starting rotation depth, and always willing to gamble on a well paid hurler in desperate need of a bounce back season to fill the need, the Kansas City Royals acquired 29 year old right-hander Ervin Santana from the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon .
Santana, who posted a highly disappointing 5.16 ERA in 30 starts this past season, has been on the trading block since July due to his struggles ? which include a career 39 home runs allowed in 178 innings ? and his $13 million team option for 2013. Just hours before that decision was to be made official, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto moved him and the $1 million buyout he would have been owed to the Royals in return for 27 minor league reliever Brandon Sisk.
Dipoto now faces a similar decision with Dan Haren, who has an option worth $15.5 million and includes a $3.5 million buyout.
For Royals general manager Dayton Moore it's a deal very similar to his trade last November that netted Jonathan Sanchez from the San Francisco Giants, although the return this time wasn't an established major league like Melky Cabrera. In this case, Moore gives away less talent and takes on around $7 million more, but I think it's a better gamble overall since Santana is just one year removed from back-to-back 220 inning seasons where he looked every bit the part of a top of the rotation pitcher. Anything close to that pace over the first half of 2013 could rehab his value enough to make him a nice trade chip or short term building block.Eric Idle/ Mike Nichols Adriana Lima Ty Pennington Tom Cruise Rolling Stones Oprah Winfrey U2 Tiger Woods Steven Spielberg

Rookie mistake: Jeremy Lin scares Scott Machado with goodbye call meant for traded Jeremy Lamb (VIDEO)

As we noted in last week's season preview, this season's Houston Rockets will be a very, very young team. This past weekend's stunning trade of speedy scorer Kevin Martin (nearly 30 years old) for bearded upgrade James Harden (barely 23) only accelerated the youth movement, as did general manager Daryl Morey's subsequent roster moves to trim Houston's roster to 15 players ? 27-year-old cuts Gary Forbes and Shaun Livingston were two of the three oldest players on the Rockets' depth chart. As it stands, swingman Carlos Delfino (a relative graybeard at age 30) and reserve shooter Daequan Cook (all of 25) are the only Rockets with more than three years of NBA experience to their credit; amid all this youth, a new crop of leaders must emerge.

[Fantasy Basketball '12: Play the official game of NBA.com]

So credit newly imported point guard Jeremy Lin, one of Morey's two prize restricted free agency acquisitions this summer, with trying to act like a veteran leader after news broke that rookie Jeremy Lamb had been part of the package shipped to Oklahoma City in exchange for Harden. The former New York Knicks point guard steeled himself, picked up his phone and dialed the 2012 lottery pick to wish him well, tell the kid to keep his head up and, one would suspect, suggest that he continue to rise and grind, as NBA players tend to do. It's a thoughtful, if difficult, thing to do.
Less difficult? Checking to make sure you're dialing the right number, which is something that ? as you can see in the video above, shared by our friends at the via Rockets blog/community ClutchFans ? fellow rookie Scott Machado would've appreciated.
More from Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:

Machado had been nervously awaiting word on whether he had made the Rockets' roster. As Lin wished him well, his heart skipped a few beats until he realized he did not need to worry. Lin had thought he called Jeremy Lamb, who had just been traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
By Monday, Machado knew [he] made the team when no one called.
"I was like, 'Hey, it's Scott, it's not Jeremy,'" Machado said of his conversation with Lin. "'Did you hear something about me?' I was all nervous. He was like, "Oh, I apologize, I apologize.' It all worked out."

It certainly did work out for Machado, a 22-year-old point guard who went undrafted out of Iona, but caught on with the Rockets after leading the nation in assists per game as a senior (9.9 dimes in 35.5 minutes per game) and finishing his collegiate career with the third-most assists in NCAA history (880, behind only Maryland triggerman Steve Blake and Kansas guard Aaron Miles) ranked 17th in assists in NCAA history (whoops). After impressing in his opportunities to run the Rockets' Summer League team, he continued to impress in preseason, surprising many by winning a spot on the roster ahead of veteran Livingston. Once the team had announced that it had parted ways with Livingston, Machado felt his place was secure ... only to have a tense moment when the phone rang and Lin was on the other end.
OK, so, not the smoothest move, Jeremy, but your instinct ? call the disheartened rook, get your Semisonic on and make with the encouragement ? was a good one. Just chalk this up to rookie hazing (and a rookie mistake for a leader) and keep it movin'.

Ryan Vogelsong?s unbelievable comeback story adds its best chapter in a familiar place (Big League Stew)

DETROIT ? If they ever make a movie about Ryan Vogelsong's life ? and they really have to be at least thinking about it by now ? some of the best scenes are going to be filmed at Comerica Park.
It was here in the visiting manager's office in July 2011 that Vogelsong learned he had made the All-Star team from Bruce Bochy, an unlikely achievement after the righthander had spent most of the previous 10 years pitching for more minor-league and Japanese squads than big league teams.
And it was here on Saturday night that Vogelsong pitched the San Francisco Giants to the brink of another World Series title, somehow putting together 5 2/3 scoreless innings before handing the game off to another dominating bullpen effort from Tim Lincecum. The end result was Vogelsong being named the winning pitcher in a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the World Series and another unbelievable item in the scrapbook that is Vogelsong's career resurrection.
"It crossed my mind," the 35-year-old said when asked if he realized how the American League ballpark had figured into some of his best moments. "When we walked in for the workout yesterday, I thought about it when I walked by (Bochy's) office.
"I mean, what an amazing experience. I was thrilled to death before the game even started just to have this opportunity. I'm just glad I was able to have a solid game and come out on the right side of this one."
Vogelsong didn't make it easy on himself, surrendering five hits and walking four while striking out only three. But he got out of the first and third innings by inducing double play ground balls from Prince Fielder and Quintin Berry. He then got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth by striking out Berry and then getting Miguel Cabrera to pop out to shortstop in a turning-point play that was tailor made for the World Series highlight reel:The Eagles Rod Stewart Shaquille O\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Neal Jerry Bruckheimer David Beckham Jessica Simpson Andrew Lloyd Webber LeBron James Neil Diamond Alex Rodriguez

Mostly NFL Notes: Week 8 Recap

Throw Robert Griffin's stat line completely out the window, as Washington receivers committed at least 10 drops, and that's no exaggeration. In a week full of an abnormally high amount of them, the Redskins were the worst, highlighted by this gem. It's not often you see a quarterback commit pass interference, but so was the case with RG3 on Sunday?Heath Miller is on pace to finish with fewer than 800 yards, but thanks to nine targets inside the 10-yard line (more than any other receiver in football), he has six touchdowns and has been the No. 3 fantasy tight end so far this year?Did you see Antonio Brown run backward for the final 20 yards on a would-be punt return TD? The play was called back because of an illegal block in the back, and Brown got an unsportsmanlike conduct for good measure as well?No way even a healthy Rashard Mendenhall can start over Jonathan Dwyer right now. He has back-to-back 100-yard rushing games despite being given a modest 17 carries in each contest and provides a nice combination of power and speed. Dwyer's 4.1 YPC after contact mark ranks as second best in the NFL. Mike Tomlin typically does the right thing, so we'll see if that's the case here.

Russell Wilson entered last week with a 2:7 TD:INT ratio on the road this season, so it was nice to see him play well away from home. It looks like he's developing a strong rapport with Sidney Rice, who appears to be worth using in fantasy leagues down the stretch? What a TD run by Marshawn Lynch. The touchdowns have been predictably down this year, but the YPC is way up, as he continues to prove me wrong. Lynch's 28 broken tackles are tied for the league lead with Adrian Peterson?I wouldn't feel at all comfortable starting Mikel LeShoure on my fantasy team right now? After scoring 16 touchdowns last season, Calvin Johnson somehow has just one entering Week 9 this year. Defenses have treated him a bit differently, but I wonder if he's more injured than the team is letting on. His drop in the end zone with 39 seconds left in the fourth quarter Sunday was brutal? The Lions have now trailed at halftime (and in the fourth quarter) of every game this season?Good to see Matthew Stafford break out, even giving fantasy owners a rushing score, but it's pretty crazy he hadn't thrown for more than one TD in a game before Sunday. And his YPA (7.2) remained unimpressive, although that's a strong Seattle defense.
This haircut prank is pretty good.
For the second time this season, I lost a teaser by 0.5 points because I was cheap with the juice (I only rolled the Bears down six points, meaning I gave 1.5 points). What were they thinking going for two up one point with six minutes left? Didn't they realize an extra point there would cover for me? Totally selfish of them, and I won't soon forget it?In actuality, Chicago was quite fortunate to win that game, which required an ill advised pick six thrown by Cam Newton. The Bears offense really sputtered, and they found themselves down 19-7 with less than seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Newton somehow has just five passing touchdowns on the year despite getting 8.0 YPA?Down 12 points with 12:09 left in the fourth quarter, it was beyond head-scratching to see Lovie Smith attempt a field goal (which was missed, but that's beside the point). It was a manageable 4th-and-5, and even had Robbie Gould made the kick, the game would have remained two scores. Speaking of odd kicking decisions in this game, Carolina chose to throw a hail mary with three seconds left in the first half over attempting a 50-yard field goal. Is Justin Medlock really incapable from that distance? Just so bizarre?Brandon Marshall is on pace to finish with 114 catches for 1,543 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, as he's been an absolute beast in PPR formats?Jonathan Stewart got just 2.5 YPC, and DeAngelo Williams actually was given 11 carries, but it really does seem like they are going to make the former the lead back in Carolina. This information is hardly a secret, but coming off a tough matchup against a Bears defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs this season, Stewart will likely be easier to trade for now than he will be next week.
I'm not sure how real these top-10 Facebook Fails are, but they made me laugh either way.
I didn't lose any money on it like my aforementioned teaser, but I'm not going to lie, I made the Eagles my "best bet" this week, which was just so spectacularly wrong. Playing life-or-death games against inferior opponents matters far less long term if Atlanta can play like that when it matters most, although that's presuming Philly is actually a good team, which seems presumptuous about now. Nnamdi Asomugha is allowing 11.1 YPA this season. Wow?It's still not entirely clear who will be starting under center for the Eagles in Week 9. But whoever it is, they will be a must-start in fantasy leagues with a matchup in New Orleans against a Saints team that is the first in NFL history to give up 400 or more yards in each of their first seven games (and 500 in three of their past five contests)?Quirky stat: Matt Ryan hasn't finished a game this year with a YPA in the range from 7.0-8.9. That's pretty crazy actually.
In honor of Halloween, here's a head illusion prank.
It's hard to believe the Patriots were down 7-0 midway through the first quarter, as the final score was 45-7. New England's 12 rushing touchdowns this season lead the NFL?Nice to see Brandon Lloyd reach the end zone twice, but not so nice to see them be his only two receptions on the day?Chris Givens now has a catch for at least 50 yards in each of his last five games, setting an NFL rookie record?I'm beginning to think Rob Gronkowski is a decent red-zone target. If only he'd show some personality on the field.
Here's footage of someone stealing an iPhone on a subway.
Andrew Luck's game-winning touchdown pass to Vick Ballard (who made a sick leap to get into the end zone) was actually his first over the previous 12 quarters. Of course, I'm not disparaging Luck, who's been very good during his rookie campaign. In fact, his AirYPA is the fourth highest in the NFL, and only one QB in the league has gotten a fewer percentage of his yardage from receivers after the catch. In other words, he's attacking with down the field throws about as much as any signal caller in football right out of the gate?It doesn't look like we'll be getting the previous version of Kenny Britt until next season, unfortunately. Although it truly does appear Chris Johnson is "back"?Pro Football Focus has graded Reggie Wayne as the second best wide receiver in football this season, with only Percy Harvin ahead of him. Pretty impressive for a soon-to-be 34-year-old.
Brazilian man interrupts own funeral.
DIRECTV picked the right game to leave off the "Game Mix," (again, what's up with the nine/two morning/afternoon split? That's horrible.), as the Chargers/Browns barnburner produced 13 total points. Weather obviously had something to do with it, but Philip Rivers is making his "down" season last year look positively Hall of Fame esque in comparison. He now has a 6.8 YPA mark with a 10:12 TD:turnover ratio, and that's with five of his seven opponents so far being in the bottom 11 as far as allowing fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, which makes it all the more incredible (his next two are as well, for what it's worth). To further pile on, his receivers have committed just 11 drops on the year (and yes, this includes a really bad one by Robert Meachem last week), with only Joe Flacco seeing fewer (is it a coincidence they have just been pinched for a stickum scandal? Hmm). Although thisshould've beendropped?Speaking of holding onto the ball, or a lack thereof, Ryan Mathews lost yet another fumble Sunday, although Norv Turner stuck with him?I expected Malcom Floyd to either be hurt or extremely productive when on the field this year, so naturally, he's remained healthy yet entirely lackluster?Antonio Gates is on pace to finish the year with 48 catches for 544 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Guess all that preseason talk about him being healthier than he'd been in years was pure noise. Not happy I fell for it in a few leagues?Just as Julio Jones and A.J. Green have taken the league by storm at wideout, Trent Richardson and Doug Martin look like immediate stars at the running back position.
Sometimes crime does pay.
All Matt Moore does is win football games. Seriously, I talked up the Jets last week and called them far from a doormat, but that performance Sunday, well, it wasn't good, although Miami certainly is a solid team. I do think Shonn Greene remains an interesting fantasy property, something that would have seemed crazy to me as recently as a month ago. He has a bye and then a trip to Seattle coming up, but in Weeks 14 and 15 he faces two defenses that rank as bottom five as far as allowing fantasy points to opposing running backs this season?Kudos to the Dolphins, who attempted a surprise onside kick just four minutes into Sunday's game?Since recording 12 catches for 253 yards (although Marqise Lee thinks that performance was weak), Brian Hartline has totaled eight receptions for 100 yards over the following three games.
This is a real commercial.
Ultimately it's hard to get worked up over a nine point win, but it was surprising to see Green Bay be up just 21-15 with less than one minute remaining at home against Jacksonville (especially with them scoring a special teams TD too). Aaron Rodgers was missing Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson, but that's really no excuse for him getting just 5.3 YPA, although he really does have possibly the worst running game in the NFL at his disposal. Over the last three games, Alex Green has 64 carries for 154 yards, which is a staggeringly bad 2.4 YPC (mind you this is with defenses focused on stopping one of the league's best passing attacks). He's obviously unusable in fantasy leagues, as Green's latest stink bomb occurred while 16-point favorites, so matchups can't be blamed?I'd stick with Rashad Jennings, as even though he got just 3.5 YPC, he was active in the passing game, and his schedule eases up moving forward.
Cousin Sal's hidden camera at a Brooklyn pizzeria.
It's remarkable the Chiefs haven't led for a single second in regulation this season. Almost as crazy as a healthy Jamaal Charles getting five carries at home against the Raiders. And then his head coach openly wondering why afterward. Charles and Darren McFadden had a combined 17 rushing attempts for 20 yards at halftime?I'm actually not entirely convinced Denarius Moore is even close to 100 percent physically, which has been a lingering problem with him, but the talent is just so obvious. He's averaged 78.7 receiving yards while scoring three touchdowns over the past three games. Moore looks like a future star? This was actually Oakland's sixth straight win in Arrowhead?Did my boy Matt Cassel really have more rushing yards than Jamaal Charles, Peyton Hillis and Shaun Draughn combined?
I still can't believe the Giants won the World Series. It's not quite as improbable as some have made it seem, since they scored the second most runs in all of baseball on the road this season (without the benefit of the DH) and have now won two of the past three World Series, but consider the following: Tim Lincecum had a 5.18 ERA, they lost their closer for the season (same with their expected second baseman), Pablo Sandoval hit 12 homers, Brandon Belt didn't break out like hoped, they lost the league's leading hitter to a PED suspension in mid August, and their big trade acquisition, Hunter Pence, hit .219/.287/.384 in the regular season and even worse (.210/.231/.290) in the postseason, so yeah, the playoff run was a bit unlikely.
With just two afternoon games, at least the Giants/Cowboys was highly entertaining. Tony Romo couldn't have played a worse first half, and Dallas was down 23-0 just 17 minutes into the game. But their defense quietly played really well, holding Eli Manning to a season-low 6.6 YPA and without a touchdown for the first time. The Giants also gained just 3.7 YPC (although that was nothing compared to the Cowboys' 1.1 mark). But obviously the score dictated some of New York's play calling on offense?Romo has a 2:10 TD:INT ratio over three home games this season? If you own Jason Witten in a PPR league, his performance Sunday was of epic proportions? As a starter this year, Felix Jones has averaged 2.1 YPC?Since 2004, Eli Manning has 25 fourth quarter comeback wins (including the postseason). The next most is his brother with 22?The Giants are now 4-0 while playing in the new Cowboys stadium? The unbelievable pass-and-catch by Romo and Dez Bryant that looked like a game-winning touchdown only to later be overturned thanks to Bryant being ruled out of bounds was such a perfect microcosm of Bryant's career and the current state of the Dallas franchise in general. You couldn't have written the script any better.
Not only were the SF Giants down 2-0 with three upcoming games in Cincinnati, they were also down 3-1 against a Cardinals team I thought was the best in baseball with an upcoming matchup of Barry Zito (who was left off the team's postseason roster in 2010) starting in St. Louis. San Francisco didn't have a seven game winning streak during the regular season, so I guess they picked a good time for their first one. During their last title run, Cody Ross won MVP of the NLCS, which made it perfect that Marco Scutaro did this year (106 swings in the postseason, with just two misses). And while Pablo Sandoval wasn't exactly as crazy as Edgar Renteria winning the World Series MVP, Panda was a bench player last time. The Tigers were shut out twice during 162 regular season games, yet the Giants shut them out in back-to-back games during their four World Series games, holding Detroit to a collective .159 batting average (only two others have been worse, and none have been since the 1960s). Bruce Bochy was masterful in the postseason and a big reason why SF won. Along with this guy.
This Denver team is officially scary. The offense putting up 530 yards against what appears to be a historically bad defense should come as no surprise, but the defense holding the Saints to just 4.2 yards per play is eye opening. The Broncos currently sit at a modest 4-3 and just one game up in the AFC West, but they will be an underdog in just one of their remaining nine games and could legitimately have a bye in the postseason. Peyton Manning has averaged 9.1 YPA with a 12:1 TD:INT ratio over the last four games? After having not scored over the first three games this year, Eric Decker has five touchdowns over his past four contests, and Demaryius Thomas has the third most receiving yards in football. There's still hope!?Seriously, how bad is this Saints defense?
This zombie drive-thru prank is pretty good.
Since the minimum is 20, Alex Smith was one pass attempt (and assumed completion) short of setting an NFL record for completion percentage Monday night, and while the sample was small, he did get 12.2 YPA with three touchdowns and a near perfect QB Rating (157.1), so it wasn't exactly all dink-and-dunk (although to be fair, he benefited from a large amount of YAC)?San Francisco has allowed the fewest YPA in the NFL this season (5.8) and is tied for the fewest TD passes given up (six) as well, but they actually entered Monday with a modest 11 sacks, which was nowhere near last year's pace. They recorded four against Arizona, but that could actually be considered a disappointment, as the Cardinals are on pace to be sacked a whopping 78 times this season. Having said that, the 49ers tied a team record by allowing only seven rushing yards Monday night?I was surprised to see Larry Fitzgerald return, as it sure looked like he was concussed. Glad he wasn't though?Vernon Davis has three catches or fewer and 37 receiving yards or fewer in four of his past five games and hasn't scored since Week 3? Where did that playmaking ability come from, Michael Crabtree? And it looks like Randy Moss still may have something to offer other than being a decoy, although one nice play doesn't come close to warranting fantasy attention? It's not the worst time to be a San Francisco sports fan right now.

Fearing Donald Fehr; do NHL owners want the lockout over? (Puck Headlines)

Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

? If you're not following Nick Cotsonika's Russian adventures on Twitter, you're missing moments like this that could severely impact his marriage.
? Check out his story on Paul Maurice coaching in the KHL. It's a keeper. [Y!]
? There were a few people waiting for Alex Ovechkin's autograph today. And by "a few" we mean "well over a thousand." [Alex Ovetjkin]
? Nick Kypreos believes that there's a "silent majority" of NHL owners who don't want to continue the lockout with a suitable deal on the table: "Ask many NHL owners outside of this small circle and if they answer truthfully they'll tell you they know as much of what's going on as you or me. Some teams will also tell you a two- to three-year slope toward 50/50 split works just fine, and to potentially burn the whole village down in an effort to keep fighting for teams like Phoenix and Florida is just plain wrong. Like McCabe and Walker in 2004, many owners' frustration lies in not having their voice heard when it matters most." [Sportsnet]
? On the NHL vs. Donald Fehr, and anonymous source tells CSN Philly: "The league was up against rank amateurs last time," said one person intimately familiar with the inner workings of the NHL. This guy is the consummate pro. Cool Hand Luke. He has no tell. A great poker face. Has buy-in from the players. And rarely dabbles in rhetoric. If he does, there's a message and a purpose behind it. And the league has no idea what do with a guy like this." [CSN Philly]
? Jack Johnson's impassioned plea, posted on his official Columbus Blue Jackets' player page "I don't have until I am 60 or 70 years old to do this job. My window of opportunity to play professional hockey is limited. If I'm lucky, I can play until I'm 40. I have been training as a hockey player my entire life, and I know it is a privilege to play in the NHL. So each month, each week, and each game that is cancelled is an opportunity I will never get back." [JMFJ]
? Former NHLPA boss Paul Kelly thinks expansion should be on the table in the CBA talks: "If the NHLPA hasn't raised it as a potential part of the solution, then it ought to," Kelly said. "Maybe they've tried and had the door slammed in their face from what we're seeing, but it really makes a great deal of sense." [THN]
? Roberto Luongo on trade talk with the Vancouver Canucks: "Obviously, when the time comes and I do have to make a decision we'll make one with the best interests for myself, the team and all that kind of stuff. But for now I think my focus is just on being ready to play no matter where that is." [QMI]

? Backhand Shelf's guide to heckling, which we assume will be passed out to fans whenever Wayne Simmonds comes to town. Because they could really use some pointers. [BS]
? Congrats to Dan Ellis, your AHL player of the week. [AHL]
? Good stuff from Los Angeles Kings assistant coach Davis Payne on the power play: "I'm going to give these guys some rope and some trust to be the players that they are supposed to be and yet at the same time, always bring them back to that foundation because it's what you're going to rely on, it's what you will go to, it's what happens when a power-play gets called late in a game, in game six of a playoff series and that could be the one that determines it. It's kind of your go-to play, you know, Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, everybody knew he was going to be running right or running left, you just had tostop it, so thatbecomes a mentality of a power-play. It's a great place to start." [LA Kings Insider]
? Interesting look at the CHLPA and its effect on college hockey: "To date, the CHLPA has been nothing more than a minor nuisance for the CHL leadership. But if it has any success, it could also become a major nuisance for college hockey. There has been an age-old split in college hockey ranks over whether it wants major junior players to be eligible for college hockey. There is no sign of that split being reconciled any time soon." [CHN]
? Finally, Ottawa Senators season ticket holders skate in their arena for Halloween. Doesn't look like anyone dressed as Paul MacLean's mustache.

Phil Neville apologizes for diving, says he won?t do it again

Everton captain Phil Neville put a damper on Everton manager David Moyes' decision to bemoan Luis Suarez's diving before the Merseyside derby by diving in the Merseyside derby. Neville was booked for his efforts on the way to a 2-2 draw, but his reaction after the match was quite different from your usualvillainousdiver.
From The Mirror:
"It was a stupid thing to do," said the Blues skipper. "I don't often find myself in that position and I thought Daniel Agger was going to take me out.
"But I got a good kick up the backside at half-time as I couldn't commit to tackles in the second half. I'll take the rollicking and I won't do it again, that's for sure."
Moyes refused to gloss over Neville's uncharacteristic moment of madness. "I said to him it's completely wrong, you don't do that," he said.
Imagine that. A manager reprimands a diver instead of pretending it's just a problem with other players on other teams and the diver seems to feel guilt and regret. It's almost as if managers have some kind of power over their players that can be more influential than all the public backlash and league punishments combined. Could this be the start of a revolutionary new approach? Probably not.

Cheat sheet: Windows 8 vs. Windows RT

To the naked eye, Windows RT looks just like Windows 8. But it's not. There are huge differences that could cause a lot of confusion for the people who buy Microsoft's Surface tablet that's launching tomorrow. Most people have no clue what Windows RT is, and that's Microsoft's fault for not making it clearer. How-to: Get started with Amazon EC2

If your company hasn't ventured an Amazon cloud deployment already, the day may be fast approaching. Customers wait and see as cloud wars rage

We often hear about companies that dove feet first into cloud computing. What we don't hear, though, is that these businesses are typically larger, more aggressive firms that put a value on trying new things to get strategic advantage -- and their example is meant to egg you on to following the same path. These companies are distinctly in the minority. Although most enterprises have some storage-as-a-service providers and a SaaS or two, they still haven't created a cloud computing strategy, nor do they have major cloud computing deployments planned. The Eagles Rod Stewart Shaquille O\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Neal Jerry Bruckheimer David Beckham Jessica Simpson Andrew Lloyd Webber LeBron James Neil Diamond Alex Rodriguez

The iPad Mini: It's all about iTunes

[UPDATED 11:15 a.m. PT] Apple today unveiled something "little": the long-fabled iPad Mini. Rumors of a 7-inch Apple tablet have been around even before the first iPad was announced, despite the fact that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in no uncertain terms that a 7-inch tablet -- what Android makers were shipping prior to the iPad's debut -- simply couldn't handle the Web or apps very well, so Apple wouldn't go there.Alex Rodriguez Will Smith Dick Wolf Dave Matthews Band Tom Brady Ronaldinho Jodie Foster Ray Romano Paris Hilton Adam Sandler

Giants one more shutout from matching ?66 Orioles? World Series record

One more victory and the San Francisco Giants win the World Series. One more shutout and they do something that's been accomplished only once before ? 46 years ago ? in modern Major League Baseball history.
The Baltimore Orioles tossed a World Series record three straight shutouts to close out the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1966. After they beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Saturday night in Game 3, the Giants are nine innings from matching those O's. Of course, the mere mention of the possibility means the Tigers will score a run or several runs in the first inning Sunday against Matt Cain, win Game 4 and stretch the series to five or six or who knows how many games?
[Y! Sports Fan Shop: Buy San Francisco Giants World Series apparel]
However, if the Giants can keep the Tigers off the scoreboard for 27 more outs (and win the game), their pitchers will join the likes of Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, Wally Bunker and Dave McNally for otherwise unparalleled stinginess. But the Giants can't match those three in one respect: Palmer, Bunker and McNally threw complete games, with Bunker and McNally winning by 1-0 scores in Games 3 and 4, respectively. They were pitching without a net! Unless you count getting solo home runs from Paul Blair in Game 3 and Frank Robinson in Game 4. Robinson, the Series' MVP, also won the Triple Crown earlier that season.
In all, the '66 O's limited the Dodgers to two runs and 17 hits over four games. They were kept scoreless for the final 33 innings of the Series, also thanks to Moe Drabowsky, who tossed 6 2/3 one-hit innings in relief of McNally in Game 1.

The '66 Series also was notable for the six errors the Dodgers made in Game 2, including three by Willie Davis. It turned out to be Sandy Koufax's final game. He would retire at age 30. (It also should be noted that Davis stole a home run from Boog Powell with an amazing catch in center field during Game 4.)
[Related: Hollow $44 million bats spell doom for Tigers]
The Tigers have pitched well in this Series, too, except for Game 1 ? and even then, Justin Verlander was a little unlucky. In Game 3, after he settled down, right-hander Anibal Sanchez was as strong as anyone the Giants have sent to the mound. He just had no margin for error, manager Jim Leyland said.
"We got a tremendous pitching effort, but we've been shut out for 18 innings, so it's pretty hard to win a game," Leyland said.
And it's really hard against the Giants when ? going back to the final three games of the NLCS ? they've tossed four shutouts and outscored their opponents 32-4.

SAP reveals policies, pricing for cloud integrations

SAP has laid out a set of pricing and policies for tying together its array of cloud-based and on-premises applications, providing some options at no charge, but others that will cost customers additional money. Application integration is a crucial question for SAP and its customers, particularly given the vigor with which the company has advocated for hybrid deployments that retain users' large investments in on-premises ERP (enterprise resource planning) and HCM (human capital management) software while adding new capabilities from the cloud.Carson Palmer Michelle Wie Reese Witherspoon Bill O\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Reilly Kate Moss Diane Sawyer Sean (Diddy) Combs John Grisham Rachael Ray Dave Chappelle
