Al Golden shares his honest response to Miami?s winning touchdown (VIDEO, NSFW)

**WARNING: NSFW (click on video from the main Dr. Saturday page)**
Miami is trying to give coach Al Golden a heart attack.
In the past two weeks, the Hurricanes have erased deficits to win (or tie) in grand fashion late in the game. On Saturday, quarterback Stephen Morris found receiver Phillip Dorsett for a 62-yard touchdown with 19 seconds remaining to give Miami a 44-37 win over N.C. State.
After the game, Golden couldn't contain his true feelings about the play and gave the same answer many were probably screaming at home when they saw the play unfold.
This is truly one of the funnier moments we've seen in a press conference this year.

Geno Smith: The story of the 2012 college football season (so far, at least)

One of the questions NFL teams ask about quarterback prospects is, can he make all the throws?
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith made every throw against Baylor. In fact, he went through the whole passing tree in the first half. And then he went through it again in the second half.
[Also: West Virginia, Baylor score 133 points in shootout for the ages]
Whether he was throwing deep posts, precise out routes or a perfectly thrown fade route to the corner, Smith had one of the best performances against a ranked team that anyone has ever seen in a 70-63 win over Baylor.
Has a Heisman Trophy race ever been decided by the end of September? Smith completed 45-of-51 passes for 656 yards and eight touchdowns against Baylor. Throughout the day he displayed a great combination of velocity, touch and accuracy, as well as having a great feel for when to tuck the ball and run for a first down. Smith now has 20 touchdowns and no interceptions this season. No other player is realistically in the Heisman picture right now, and NFL teams have to be rapidly moving Smith up their draft boards. He doesn't seem to have many flaws. Some team is going to land a nice franchise quarterback next April.
But Smith still has a lot of work left to do for West Virginia, and he has a chance to turn into a Jimmer-like phenomenon for college football.
[Related: West Virginia's Tavon Austin caps TD with celebration fail]
Smith has a fantastic narrative that more fans will start to learn, having chosen football over being an art student, another field in which he was gifted. Smith is remarkably intelligent, makes creative plays on the field that are uncanny and has the backing of a rabid fan base that will help grow his legend. That total package is enough to perhaps make Smith the dominant and enduring storyline of the 2012 season. Just like Jimmer Fredette took over the college basketball world in 2011.
Every game Smith plays from here on out should become a must-watch game for any football fan. That includes Sundays for the next dozen or so years.

Why the PC makers and Microsoft will never beat Apple

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that struggling Hewlett-Packard was doubling its investment in PC designers to overcome its design disadvantage against Apple. The Journal quoted CEO Meg Whitman, who took the job a year ago, as saying when she became CEO she was handed a "brick" that had no appeal to her as a user. This anecdote was supposed to explain how HP has ended up becoming a boring PC maker with declining sales of PCs against the Apple juggernaut.Phil Mickelson J.K. Rowling Brad Pitt Peter Jackson

5 signs your cloud service provider can't handle tier 1 apps

Migrating mission-critical applications to the cloud is fundamentally different from migrating less critical applications and processes to the cloud. Picking the right cloud hosting provider is among the most important decisions you'll make when planning the migration of your Tier 1 applications. 3 ways to improve cloud performance

Performance issues hold back some cloud computing efforts. This happens because many of those who stand up cloud-based applications did not account for the latency systemic to many cloud-based systems. For the most part, these performance issues are caused by the fact that cloud-based applications are typically widely distributed, with the data far away from the application logic, which itself may be far away from the user. Unless careful planning has gone into the design of the system, you're going to run into latency and even reliability issues.Denzel Washington Cast of Desperate Housewives Jennifer Aniston

Tsuyoshi Nishioka says goodbye to a guaranteed $3.25 million, requests release from Twins

How badly did Tsuyoshi Nishioka want to quit playing baseball in America?
Bad enough that he told the Minnesota Twins on Friday that they could keep the $3.25 million the team still owed him if it released him from his contract.
It's unclear if any members of the Twins front office blew any horns or popped any champagne upon receiving that request, but the answer was a no-doubt-about-it "yes." The imported second baseman has been an unmitigated disaster ever since he signed with the team before the 2011 season.
Though Nishioka had his 2011 interrupted by a broken leg last season, the 28-year-old was awful when he did find the lineup and he was also a defensive liability in the infield. He hit .215/.267/.236 with zero homers and 20 RBIs over 71 combined games over the two seasons and spent most of 2012 playing at Triple-A Rochester. His only big-league playing time this season came in three games at the beginning of August before he was demoted again. That had to be tough for someone who was a five-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner with the Chiba Lotte Marines, but he simply wasn't getting the job done.
The Twins have already paid over $11 million for Nishioka's two seasons and negotiating rights. They'll save the $3 million he was owed for 2013 and the $250,000 it would have cost to buy out his option for 2014.
Here's what Nishioka said in a statement:
"I would like to thank the Twins organization for helping me fulfill my dream of playing in Major League Baseball. I take full responsibility for my performance, which was below my own expectations. At this time, I have made the decision that it is time to part ways. I have no regrets and know that only through struggle can a person grow stronger. I appreciate all the support the team and the fans in Minnesota and Rochester have shown me. Arigatou gozaimasu (Thank you very much)."
This isn't the first time that we've seen a player choose pride over a guaranteed paycheck worth millions. Back in 2011, Gil Meche told the Kansas City Royals that he could not possibly accept the $12 million they were legally obligated to pay him and decided to retire instead. The big difference here is that Nishioka will presumably try and give baseball another go in Japan, though you still have to commend him for his decision to admit that his great American experience just wasn't working out.
So that's that, I suppose. Nishioka will likely head back to his homeland, leaving a multitude of Boston Red Sox fans to wonder one thing: Why couldn't Daisuke Matsuzaka have done the same?

America East Preview: Early departures drain league of some of its top talent

Yahoo! Sports is breaking down each league for the upcoming college basketball season working backward from No. 31 to No. 1. Here's a look at our No. 29 league, the America East.
In a college basketball offseason that featured more transfers than ever before, no conference lost more talent than the America East.
Four McGlynn, rookie of the year in the league at Vermont last season, left for Towson University to play in a more high-profile league. Jake O'Brien, Boston University's all-league big man, bolted for Temple once the Terriers learned they would be ineligible for postseason play. Albany lost two of its top three players within days of one-another when first team all-league guard Gerardo Suero left early to pursue a pro career and backcourt mate Logan Aronhalt transferred to Maryland. And already-woeful Binghamton got even worse when three of its top five scorers last season left in April.
As a result of that talent drain, the America East appears headed for a down season even by the standards of a league that finished 28th and 29th in the RPI the past two seasons. Every team has holes to fill, including those unaffected by the transfer epidemic.
Defending regular season champ Stony Brook graduated three of its top four scorers and conference tournament winner Vermont lost its two top scorers, but the Seawolves and Catamounts may be the class of the league again anyway.
For Stony Brook to finally make the NCAA tournament after falling in the America East title game three straight years, do-it-all forward Tommy Brenton must look more for his own shot, speedy point guard Dave Coley needs to make better decisions with the ball in his hands and a talented freshman class has to contribute immediately. For Vermont to topple the Seawolves, the Catamounts need underclassmen who played complementary roles last season to shoulder a greater load this season.
It's a narrow enough gap between last year's two best teams and the rest of the league that it wouldn't be a surprise to see other contenders emerge. Hartford hopes to build on a strong finish last season. Albany needs the rest of its backcourt to collectively make up for the loss of Suero and Aronhalt. And Boston University has a potent backcourt but must somehow find the motivation to challenge for a league title in a year when the Patriot League-bound Terriers are ineligible for the conference tournament.
MAKING A LIST
Best shooter: Jayson Guerrier, Albany
Best playmaker: D.J. Irving, Boston University
Best defender: Tommy Brenton, Stony Brook
Coach on the rise: Steve Pikiell, Stony Brook
Coach on the hot seat: Randy Monroe, UMBC
Three must-see games: 1. Stony Brook at Vermont, Jan. 18 (First rematch of last year's America East title game); 2. Stony Brook at Boston University, Feb. 28 (The Terriers' final America East game) 3. Vermont at Harvard, Nov. 27 (Early barometer for the Catamounts against a team that beat them a year ago)
FACTS AND FIGURES
New coaches: Tommy Dempsey, Binghamton (Formerly the head coach at Rider)
Regular-season winner last season: Stony Brook
Tourney winner last season: Vermont
League RPI rank in each of past 3 seasons: 2011-12: 29th; 2010-11: 28th, 2009-10: 24th
Last NCAA tourney win by a league team: 2005, Vermont as a No. 13 seed

Cloud storage: The final nail in tape's coffin

More than two years ago, I wrote about the persisting value of tape as an archival backup medium. At the time, the LTO-5 tape standard had recently been announced in an effort to stave off ever-increasing pressure from disk-to-disk backup products. Since then, a lot has changed. Although the nearly twice-as-capable LTO-6 tape standard will hit the market soon, disk-to-disk backup has become a much more popular way to back up the enterprise.Jerry Bruckheimer David Beckham Jessica Simpson Andrew Lloyd Webber

The 3 biggest mistakes made by security pros

Last week, I discussed the three biggest mistakes senior management makes in computer security. This week, let's examine the three biggest mistakes computer security engineers commit -- and have to answer for when they deal with senior management. You'll notice a resemblance between last week's post and this installment. No coincidence there; the issues are similar, though they differ in the details. Let's take a look at the problems.Rush Limbaugh Denzel Washington Cast of Desperate Housewives

Did Chris Chelios burn a Jay Cutler Bears jersey in Chicago bar? (VIDEO)

TMZ has alleged that the former Chicago Blackhawks great Chris Chelios assisted an attractive woman in burning maligned Chicago Bears Jay Cutler's jersey in effigy at Stanley's Kitchen and Tap in Downtown Chicago.

Via TMZ:
The video was shot inside Stanley's Kitchen and Tap in Downtown Chicago -- showing Chicago Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios lighting Jay's jersey on fire while some hot chick dangles it from her fingers.
One source inside the bar tells us Chris lit the jersey then said, Cutler's "nothing but a bitch."
At this point you might be wondering if you were going to see any Chris Chelios in that Chris Chelios video.
The original uncensored (NSFW) video was posted on YouTube on Monday afternoon from a "dnibbs," titled "Chelios burns Cutler jersey." At one point in the clip, you can hear someone chant Chelios' name. And, according to this tweet, one dude was singing Rage Against The Machine with Chelios while he and his buddies were at Stanley's. (Please note the StanBurger sign in back of them.)
Why burn a Jay Cutler jersey? Because he's terrible. Even if his smoking meme owns the Internet.
Now, assuming this was former NHL great Chris Chelios helping with the torching of Cutler ? what is it with Chris Chelios and lockouts that makes him go all Mr. Hyde on people?
In 1994, Chelios infamously wondered if Gary Bettman would be "taken out" by a disgruntled fan or player in order to save the season. He did something similar, though less psychotic, during the 2004 work stoppage.
But, in fairness to Cheli, he never set fire to a business suit with an NHL tie in a bar. At least not that we're aware of.

Concession Speech: 2012 San Diego Padres (Big League Stew)

As the regular season winds down, many teams are already facing an offseason filled with golf rounds and hot-stove strategy.
But we're not going to let them get off that easy. No sir. No way. In an attempt to bring some closure between franchise and follower, we're giving a blogger from each team the opportunity to give a concession speech for this year's squad. Up next in our series is Brian Polk , a fanatical Friars fan who wrote the 10 best things about being a Padres fan for the Stew earlier this year.
My fellow Padres fans,
When they write about our 2012 campaign in the history books, when your children look you in the eye and ask you if the 2012 Padres were contenders, tell them not that the Padres lost. Tell them, my friends, that the Padres just ran out of time.
Yes. it's been a remarkable journey, ladies and gentlemen. The season was certainly hard to watch at times, but we still have a lot of which to be proud. I, for one, love our team. I love our stadium. I love its seats. Its foul poles are just the right height. And despite being out of contention from nearly the beginning of the season, the Padres showed some second-half flashes of brilliance, even going 18-10 in August, up there with the best squads in the league.
Indeed, this team of mavericks is very different from the one we knew at the beginning of the season. We knew coming into 2012 we didn't have much in the way of star power or a pitching ace. We thought, at least, we had a solid starting rotation anchored by Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez, and, well, you know there was... uh... well... Oops. Giants? replacements come up big in rout of Panthers

"A great scouting department."
That's how New York Giants receiver Ramses Barden, who caught nine passes for 138 yards on Thursday night, explained how his team kept coming up with feel-good stories like undrafted receiver Victor Cruz. Rarely has this been more evident than in the Giants' 36-7 thrashing of the Carolina Panthers. Receiver Hakeem Nicks out of the game with a foot injury, so as Carolina's coverage switched to Cruz, it was Barden who came up big in his first career start.
"The mantra of the whole week was 'the next man up,'" Barden said. He was a third-round draft pick out of Cal-Poly in the 2009 NFL Draft, expected to replace Plaxico Burress with his size and playmaking ability, but it hadn't panned out to date.
"Ramses Barden has played well every time he's played," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "He has just been injured. That's all."
Since he took over for Ernie Accorsi in 2007, Reese has proven himself as one of the better NFL executives when it comes to picking off real talent in the late rounds and off the street.
Running back Andre Brown, taken in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of North Carolina State, was an even more compelling reclamation project. Brown rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and seemed to have Carolina's passive run defense on a string all night. Not bad for a guy who had bounced around the NFL in the last couple of years -- Brown had been released eight different times by five different teams, including both teams playing in this game, after tearing his Achilles' tendon in his rookie training camp. He beat out D.J. Ware to make the final cuts, rushed for 71 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday, and really tore it loose whole replacing Ahmad Bradshaw, who was out with a neck injury.
Adding to the drama for Brown was the fact that when he entered the Panthers' Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, the memory of one of those eight cuts came home to him in a big way.
"Walking into this stadium ? and we drove by the spot where I had to park my car and go up there and take that walk up to the office," he said. "It really humbled me. And [it] made sure that everything is not guaranteed."
What is guaranteed is that even when Bradshaw comes back to the lineup, Brown will have earned playing time, perhaps in a tandem backfield. Rookie first-round pick David Wilson has been in Tom Coughlin's doghouse since an early fumble in the season-opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and the Giants like what they see in Brown.
"Andre Brown had an injury when he was a rookie and bounced around a bit and circled back to us," Reese said. "We always liked him. We thought he wasDerrick Ward-like but faster."

Manning, who was a veritable sharpshooter all night, told his team before the game that it is opportunities like these which gave the unheralded a chance to shine. He noted that Barden ran the wrong way on the first play of the game, a 12-yard completion to Cruz, but after that, Barden took off. He was targeted 10 times, more than any other Giants receiver, and helped Manning put up a stat like that was tough to beat -- 27 completions in 35 attempts for 288 yards and a touchdown. It was old-school Giants football at its best.
Part of the Giants' success with under-the-radar players is their ability to be patient with talented prospects who may not get the hang of things right away.
"I have seen a lot of guys after their third year enter their fourth year and turn it on," Reese said. "[Receiver] Amani Toomer comes to mind. His first three years, he was trying to get it, trying to get it In his fourth year, he was lights out. He was one of the all-time great receivers. It is not always a three-year rule with guys."
On the other side of the ball, second-year Panthers quarterback Cam Newton struggled throughout the game. Carolina's vaunted read-option offense was kept under wraps as linebacker Michael Boley spied Newton out of the backfield, and New York's pass rush had Newton talking to himself all the way through the game. He completed just 16 of 30 passes for 242 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions.
"It was nothing they did, it was all on us,'' Newton said. "Offensively, we didn't get the job done. We knew what type of game it was going to be. Of course, they have elite defensive linemen and elite guys on defense, but we have good players on offense. If I was a fan of the Carolina Panthers I would be holding my head down in shame of the product that was out there today.''
Newton isn't the first Giants opponent to fail to give proper credit after a loss, but the G-Men don't really care. As Andre Brown and Ramses Barden proved Thursday night, it doesn't matter what praise you get if you're on the right side of the won-loss column.

Billy Gillispie resigns at Texas Tech, likely ending his head coaching career

In the two years between his abrupt firing at Kentucky and his celebrated arrival at Texas Tech, Billy Gillispie was always one of the most intriguing coaches on the market.
A DUI and a high-profile flameout in Lexington certainly had damaged his stock, yet fan bases clamored for their schools to hire him as a result of the remarkable turnarounds he'd previously engineered at long-struggling UTEP and Texas A&M.
Unemployment won't be nearly as kind to Gillispie this time because the way he wasted his second chance.
Gillispie officially "resigned" Thursday evening citing "medical reasons," a hollow face-saving gesture that does little to obscure the real truth. Yes, the high blood pressure and stress-related ailments Gillispie has battled the past few weeks are scary, but the reality is he was almost certainly going to be fired even if he had been healthy enough to coach.
What ended Gillispie's tenure at Texas Tech ? and maybe his career as a Division I head coach ? were allegations he forced injured players to practice, bullied players and staffers and generally created an unhealthy climate inside the program.
First, current playersexpressed concerns during a meeting with athletic director Kirby Hocutt. Then came reports thatGillispie's behavior had led 15 players to transfer during his 18-month Texas Tech tenure and numerous other basketball staffers to leave as well. And finally, his best returning player, Jordan Tolbert, told ESPN.com last week that he too would leave the program if Gillispie were invited back.
Viewed through a narrow prism, these incidents might not prevent a risk-taking athletic director intent on making a splash from giving a contrite Gillispie another chance someday. Combine his disastrous Texas Tech tenure with his other transgressions, however, and it's pretty clear that a guy who five years ago was the most coveted coach on the market is now completely unemployable.
The players Gillispie recruited at Kentucky often turned out to be nowhere close to good enough for the SEC. Worse yet, stories of Gillispie's abrasive personality and borderline-abusive tacticsare rampant from his abrupt two-year tenure in Lexington.
Gillispie once got so angry at Josh Harrellson he forced the center to spend halftime of a game at Vanderbilt in a bathroom stall and then had him ride more than 200 miles home in the back of the equipment van. He also allegedly kicked star Jodie Meeks off the team at halftime of a 2009 NIT game against Notre Dame. And most seriously, heallegedly pressured Derrick Jasper into returning too soon from microfracture surgery, an injury from which the talented guard never fully recovered.
Texas Tech took a chance on Gillispie in spite of those stories because school officials believed he'd learned from his mistakes and he would be a better fit in football-crazed Lubbock than a basketball fish bowl like Lexington. Instead his tenure with the Red Raiders lasted a mere one season during which Gillispie won just one Big 12 game in part because the players he inherited from previous coach Pat Knight weren't good enough to be competitive.
Associate head coach Chris Walker will take control of the Texas Tech program on an interim basis, giving the Red Raiders a year to find the appropriate candidate to lift them out of this mess. Meanwhile, Gillispie will have plenty of free time to get healthy and to ponder his murky future.
Five years ago, he was a coach on the rise ready to ascend to the peak of his profession. Two years ago, he was a risky but intriguing option for a program seeking to rebuild. And now, between fighting personal problems and crashing and burning at his last two jobs, he's virtually untouchable and unlikely to resurface as a Division I head coach again.

The Juice: Yankees and O?s stay neck and neck in AL East, Oakland?s road trip hits early turbulence (Big League Stew)

The Juice is going strong in its fifth season of fun! Stop by each weekday for an ample serving of news from the action, plus great photos, stats and video highlights.
How bad do you want it? : One of the aims of the new playoff system was that it'd put a premium on winning your division in order to avoid the random nature of the do-or-die wild card play-in game. Nowhere is that dynamic more evident in the AL East, where the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are clawing at each other for the ALDS-guaranteeing safety of first place. Both teams have won four straight games with the Yankees again taking a slim half-game lead after sweeping a day-night doubleheader from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday with 4-2 and 2-1 wins at Yankee Stadium .
The Orioles, meanwhile, kept their extra-inning magic alive on the west coast, sweeping the Mariners as Adam Jones' 11th-inning home run gave Baltimore a 3-1 win .
The most impressive performance from either team came from Ichiro, who collected seven total hits. Three came while batting leadoff for Derek Jeter in the matinee and his total output ? which included four stolen bases in the nightcap ? impressed the Yankees shortstop.
''That's tough to do,'' (Derek) Jeter told reporters. ''Doubleheader. I don't think I've ever done that in a doubleheader. I've been on the other side of it maybe an 0 for 8.''
