Review: Windows Azure shoots the moon

A long time ago in a century slipping further and further away, Bill Gates compared MSN with the exploding World Wide Web, saw the future, and pivoted nicely to embrace the Internet. Why the feds keep stumbling in the cloud

Although federal agencies have expanded their use of cloud services, many challenges remain for full implementation, says Citizens Against Government Waste in its 2012 review of the federal cloud efforts. There is some good news. According to a 2012 survey of federal civilian and defense personnel, $5.5 billion had been saved through the use of cloud computing technology. However, the survey respondents also stated that wider cloud adoption could have saved as much as $12 billion. J.K. Sam Mitchell laments the fact that he was ?not allowed to be that tough on Andrea? Bargnani

Fresh off his work re-tooling the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns after disappointing turns at the hands of Jason Kidd and Stephon Marbury, Bryan Colangelo was a hot commodity in 2006. The GM was rumored to possibly have enough basketball sway to take over in New York, but instead of attempting to make hay out of Isiah Thomas? salted soil, he instead accepted a job running the Toronto Raptors. With cap space in hand (thanks to deals with Isiah, of course) and a franchise player in Chris Bosh already on the roster, Colangelo?s nouveau touch seemed to be the perfect recipe for success.
It?s a long way of saying that he was hot stuff, his word was law, and that previous regime carryover Raptors coach Sam Mitchell was then thought to be soon on his way out in return for a Colangelo hire. Mitchell thrived in his first season working with Colangelo, though, putting together a playoff team without having to rely heavily on the services of rookie Andrea Bargnani, a 7-foot scorer that Colangelo chose first overall in what turned out to be a very weak 2006 NBA draft.
Bargnani turned out to be a blown selection, and years later his play has turned into a constant source of frustration for Raptor fans. Mitchell was let go in 2008, and in a recent interview Sam expressed regret that he was unable to coach Colangelo?s signature selection the way he thought best. From SportsNet:
"I wasn't allowed to coach Andrea the same way I was allowed to coach Jose (Calderon)," Mitchell told Tim & Sid on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Wednesday. "I was a hard ass on Jose; I was hard on him, but look at the type of player he turned out to be.

"I was not allowed to be that tough on Andrea because within the organization we felt he couldn't take it. And my whole thing was if he can't take it then we can't build around him. And no one thought Jose could take it, and Jose did."
Calderon?s rookie season came in 2005-06, Colangelo?s last turn with the Suns, and it?s fair to say that the 24-year old struggled under Mitchell?s withering tone. Jose flourished over the next three seasons, though, putting up fantastic per minute numbers and turning into one of the more talkative leaders in the NBA.
Bargnani, not so much. Mitchell only started the 21-year old rookie twice in 2006-07, a decision that was no doubt made in concert with the team?s front office, as Brandon Roy ran away with the Rookie of the Year award. By his second season, he was shooting under 40 percent. For a spell there in 2011-12 it seemed as if Bargs could function as an offensive option whose defensive limitations could be slightly masked, but he?s taken a huge step backwards this season.
Worse for Bargnani, personally, the Raptors are 8-2 (after a 4-19 start) with him sidelined with a ligament tear in his elbow. Kurt Helin at Pro Basketball Talk details the differences:
Their offense is scoring 8.3 points per 100 possessions better than their season average in the last 10 games, in part because they are just shooting the ball better (their eFG%, which accounts for the bonus of a made three, has jumped from 48.3 percent on the season to 52.7 percent the last 10 games).
Then on the other end of the floor, the Raptors defense is nearly 4 points per 100 possessions better than their season average.
Look at it this way, in games 11-20 of the season the Raptors were a -8.2 points per 100 possessions when you compare their offense and defense. In the last 10 games that is +10.3, which is second best in the NBA in that stretch.
Helin also notes that the absence of Bargnani has created more opportunities for Ed Davis, a hustling big man that is superior to Bargs on the defensive end (so is a cloth cap, though, if we?re honest) and an upgrade offensively in spite of Andrea?s potential. He?s a low-usage guy that makes a ton of shots, with a stroke from the perimeter (not unlike his father?s) that is fundamentally strong. Even if Davis weren?t around in reserve, though, Bargnani?s late period Larry Johnson-type game would still be a millstone.
Despite the turnaround, though, it?s clear that it?s Colangelo that is the millstone. Drafting Bargnani in the first place wasn?t his biggest mistake ? all of us were on board with that decision back in 2006 ? it was the 2009 extension that Colangelo bid against himself to sign Bargnani to that haunts the team to this day. No other team would have offered Bargnani anywhere near the five years and $50 million that Colangelo handed him a year before he would have hit the market as a restricted free agent, and yet Colangelo thought it necessary to make a star out of his non-star by paying him like a star (along with an awful contract given to an already-30 Hedo Turkoglu). Clueless Raptor ownership didn?t help, and here we are ? Bargs is due to make over $22 million in two years after this miserable season.
There?s your root cause: Colangelo?s personnel moves and the influence he still somehow wields over Raptor ownership. It?s probably true that a heavy-handed touch from Mitchell wouldn?t have resulted in Bargnani becoming a better player, Sam was a bit of a nutter and even he admits that Andrea ?just doesn't seem like he has the passion for the game.? Yelling and screaming at people in attempts to get them to love things just doesn?t work out. Take it from a guy with rage issues who loves all sorts of terrible bands and wants you to hear a mix CD he just made.
The Raptors, currently, are one of the NBA?s better stories. Even after that awful start the group is just 2.5 games out of the last playoff spot in the East, and on Tuesday they took down a Portland team featuring an assistant coach in Jay Triano that went 25-40 as Raptors head coach following the 8-9 start that Mitchell put together to begin his final season in Toronto. The group is fun to watch and full of intriguing young players, even if there isn?t a star among them just yet.
Bryan Colangelo was a star in 2006. He inherited a star in Chris Bosh and was given the chance to not only draft a star in that June?s draft but put the pieces together needed to acquire a star with his significant cap flexibility.
Instead, he frittered nearly seven years of Canada?s lone NBA option?s time away. The Raptors include fans that move from coast to coasts that far exceed America?s continental borders, including expatriates that live all over America. For all the talk about how the NBA is a better place when the New York Knicks are successful, in a way it might be just as true if Toronto were a franchise worth cheering.
That won?t happen, though, until Bryan Colangelo completely revises his decision-making process, or the team?s ownership decides to go in a different direction with their personnel boss. There is a lot of blame to go around, from Mitchell?s missteps to Bargnani?s lack of development to Bosh leaving the team in 2010 for little to no compensation.
One guy has been there through it all, though.

Andy Reid?s ?95 percent? chance seems to have moved from Arizona to Kansas City

When it comes to CoachWatch rumors before said coaches are actually hired, it's best to heed the advice of the immortal Marvin Gaye: "Believe half of what you see, son, and none of what you hear." This is always a fluid process, and no process has been more so than the one involving former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid. Just a day after every NFL insider seemed to have the Arizona Cardinalsas Reid's next destination, it now appears as if Reid is about to become the Kansas City Chiefs' new head coach. He would replace Romeo Crennel, who was fired on Monday, just as Reid was.
SI.com's Peter King notes that the Chiefs interviewed Atlanta Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong onTuesday, which would satisfy the NFL's "Rooney Rule" requirement that a minority candidate be interviewed for every head coaching position.
The change in scenery from Arizona, where Reid was thought to be going on a "95 percent" certainty per a source who talked to ESPN's Adam Schefter, happened when Reid met with Chiefs brass on Wednesday. The meeting included Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, general manager Scott Pioli, executive Ryan Petkoff and team president Mark Donovan, who worked with Reid in Philadelphia. Reid's agent, Bob LaMonte, was also reportedly present. Schefter reported that one source told him, "The major issues have been discussed and agreed upon," and another source said, "This is going to happen fast."
Jason La Canfora, the other guy who's been up on this story, reported via Twitter on Thursday morning that if the Chiefs hire Reid, Pioli would likely be let go. That might set Reid up to bring his own staff in from top to bottom, including former Eagles personnel man and recently fired Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert. Reid has also reportedly assembled a staff that may include ex-Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, former Eagles offensive and defensive assistant Juan Castillo, and former Eagles assistant and Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress.
In response to Reid's upgraded interest in the Chiefs, the Cardinals have asked permission of the Pittsburgh Steelers to interview offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who served that same function for them under recently fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt in 2007 and 2008. Haley then spent three seasons as the Chiefs' head coach before heading to the Steel City in 2012 to take over the offense that Bruce Arians used to run. Haley and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have not always seen eye-to-eye, and it's not a certainty that he'd survive another down season.
Whether Reid chooses the Cardinals or Chiefs, his main priority will be to bolster the quarterback position. Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, who Pioli signed to a six-year, $63 million contract in 2009, has underperformed and might not be back in 2013. The Chiefs have the first overall pick in the 2013 draft, and while the upcoming quarterback class doesn't seem to have anyone worthy of that slot, having the first selection in the second round of the same draft presents the Chiefs with an interesting host of options at the position. The Chiefs also have a lot of talent on defense, and a superb running back in Jamaal Charles.

Pistons? Charlie Villanueva fined $25K for flagrant foul on Kings? Isaiah Thomas (VIDEO)

The NBA has fined Detroit Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva $25,000 for a flagrant foul he committed on Tuesday against Sacramento Kings guard Isaiah Thomas, league executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The foul occurred just before halftime of Tuesday night's Kings/Pistons matchup at The Palace of Auburn Hills. With both the shot and game clock winding down, Kings swingman John Salmons passed the ball to Thomas on the left wing. Thomas drove around a rotating Tayshaun Prince and made his way to the lane, but arrived too late, with the 24-second buzzer going off before he could let loose a potential buzzer-beating floater.
Thomas was, however, just in time to get clobbered in the air by Villanueva, whose attempted contest of the forthcoming shot resulted in his right forearm hitting Thomas on the left arm and his hand coming through to catch Thomas in the face as he fell. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound sophomore, as you might expect, did not take too kindly to the contact from the 6-foot-11, 240-pound UConn product and noted boxing enthusiast:

After Kings center DeMarcus Cousins stepped in the middle to keep the peace ? no, seriously ? the officials separated the players, Sacramento coach Keith Smart shepherded his point guard away, Villanueva returned to the Pistons bench and everyone awaited the refs' ruling on the play. The result: a flagrant foul 2 for contact determined "unnecessary and excessive," triggering Villanueva's automatic ejection and a forthcoming fine of no less than $1,000 from the league office. The eighth-year veteran had nine points, one rebound, one steal, one block and one assist in 11 minutes of play before getting the gate.

After the game ? which the Pistons won 103-97 behind strong outings from the inside-out combo of center Greg Monroe (18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two blocks) and point guard Brandon Knight (20 points, four assists) and sharp reserve play from the likes of rookie Andre Drummond, spark plug Will Bynum and improving tweener Austin Daye, who hit a 3-pointer with 11.5 seconds remaining to seal the win ? Thomas vented his frustration at not only the foul, but also Villanueva's play in general, according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee:
The Kings said it wasn't the first hard foul by Villanueva. Thomas said the fact he was airborne on the play wasn't the worst part for him.
"No, it was just the fact that it was a dirty play and he's a dirty player," Thomas said. "It is what it is. He got kicked out of the game, so it wasn't nothing big. A lot of guys do stuff like that knowing you can't really fight in this league, so it's all right." [...]
Thomas appeared to take a swing at Villanueva but denied doing that.
"I didn't swing on him," he said. "That's one thing I didn't do. In the heat of the battle, in the heat of the moment, it is what it is."
The potential swing in question appeared to come right after Thomas sprang up to get in Villanueva's face, when the Pistons' Knight grabbed Thomas from behind to hold him back, Villanueva had his left arm up on Thomas' shoulder to keep the point guard at bay, and Thomas raised his right arm, with what appeared to be a clenched fist, toward Villanueva's head before bringing it back down to remove Villanueva's arm.
You could read that as a swing or as just trying to get a much taller man's hand off you; the league office, apparently, agreed with Thomas' claim when they reviewed the tape of the incident, as he received no penalty or punishment in the matter.
As it turned out, Ben Golliver of SI.com's The Point Forward was correct in assuming that Jackson wouldn't levy an overly harsh fine or suspension on Villanueva, "because Villanueva didn?t appear to cleanly and directly strike Thomas in the head or neck, Thomas was able to continue playing, and the foul did not lead to any serious pushing or shoving afterwards." Villanueva's fine is $10,000 less than the $35,000 penalty that Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard had to pay for the flagrant-2 hit he laid on Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets last week.
If the video above isn't rocking for you, please feel free to check out the foul and its aftermath elsewhere, thanks to XK Cheung.

Arizona basketball commit Rondae Jefferson had himself an electric night

University of Arizona basketball commit Rondae Jefferson performed his best Tracy McGrady impression, sunk a circus game-winning shot with 7.8 seconds remaining and kept Chester (Pa.) High's 57-game winning streak against Pennsylvania teams alive -- all in one impressive performance against Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia).
In the second quarter of Friday's marquee Pete and Jameer Nelson Classic matchup, the senior southpaw snatched a rebound, dribbled coast-to-coast around just about every Imhotep defender, tossed the ball off the backboard and slammed it home for SportsCenter's No. 2 highlight on New Year's Day.
Then, with the game tied and regulation running out, Jefferson accepted an entry pass on the right block, turned left towards the basket and sunk a looping up-and-under layup over his left shoulder that sent the crowd gathered Widener University into a frenzy and delivered a 63-61 victory to the state's top-ranked team.
Jefferson's game-winner gave him 18 points to go along with his 15 rebounds on the night.

When his dunk made SportsCenter's Top 10 highlights a few days later, he posted on his extremely active Twitter account, "Espn y'all I made it!!!!!!"
If you think you've heard Jefferson's name before, you may remember the 6-foot-7, 200-pound forwardfrom such YouTube sensations as hisreenactment of Michael Jordan and Spike Lee's legendary Nike commercial or his leapfrog dunk over University of Illinois commit Austin Colbert at the Mary Kline Classic this past spring.
Rivals.com ranks Jefferson nationallyas the No. 19 senior recruit -- and No. 4 small forward -- in the Class of 2013. He committed to the Arizona Wildcats in September.

TOKYO, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Former Major League Baseball player Andruw Jones's Christmas morning arrest on a battery charge will not endanger his move to Japan's Rakuten Eagles, the club's president said on Thursday. Making it real with 3D printing

The thrill of 3D printing is that is bridges the virtual and the actual. Based on manufacturing technologies developed decades ago, the 3D printing process begins with carefully wrought 3D design files and ends with the robotic arm of a 3D printer flying around to fabricate physical objects of plastic or metal. It's the darling of hacker and steampunk communities and the hope of many who'd love to see a boom in small-scale manufacturing. J.K. Comeback Kids? Rich Harden, Scott Kazmir and Jeremy Bonderman ink minor league deals (Big League Stew)

Francisco Liriano?s new two-year, $14 million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates headlined Friday's flurry of starting pitcher signings, but there were three other interesting and noteworthy players who reached minor league agreements with new teams and accepted invitations to spring training.
Rich Harden, Scott Kazmir and Jeremy Bonderman have all achieved varying degrees of success in the big leagues ?though none of them reached a consistent level of dominance that many believed they were capable ?before injuries and ineffectiveness teamed up to put their careers in a holding pattern. Now all three of them will attempt to reclaim a spot in a major league rotation, or at least earn a prominent role, during what could have been a prime year in their careers.
Here's a quick look at where the hopeful "comeback kids" have landed, and what their chances, if any, might be to achieve their goal again.
